With the help of our woodland volunteers, we are making progress on our mission to give biodiversity a boost. In the Millennium Woods this has so far entailed planting over 1000 plugs plants of native species, cutting scallops into the rides to let more light into the forest floor, and putting up birdhouses throughout.
Walkers will have noticed changes to the meadow area at the top of the woods. The next stage here is the sowing of yellow rattle which should supress invasive grasses that monopolise the meadow, preventing a variety of plants from thriving. The idea is that it will give those other plants that want to grow a chance, and any wildflowers that we sow at a later date a much better chance of taking. But before you can scatter, first you must rake - tiring work so a huge thank you to our volunteers!
Over the next few months, look out for bat boxes popping up, and more information about the wildlife we are trying to support.
Another addition you may spot among the trees: a canopy shelter in the forest school area so that our local children can enjoy, learn and be inspired in our wonderful wood come rain, sleet or shine!
